Batson L. Hewitt is a founding partner of Palmetto Commercial Properties. He has been a pioneer in real estate development in Charleston for nearly 40 years. His deep appreciation of our unique Lowcountry history and culture has been a guiding principle of a long and distinguished career.
“What we have in Charleston in terms of ecological, historical and cultural diversity is extremely rare. I have seen other developers come and go because they did not see the need to take the time or understand the vital civic-private sector intersection that underpins a successful Charleston real estate development.”
Hewitt credits his successful track record to staying with a conservative, hands-on approach and a clear understanding of the fact that your reputation in a community is your life blood. “Our French Quarter Inn and Spectator Hotel projects impacted both Charleston’s historic City Market area and the sensitive French Quarter and Ansonborough Neighborhoods. We spent over a year developing relationships with the Neighborhood Associations as well as municipal and other civic organizations before starting construction on each of these projects. Creating positive and lasting relationships is at the core of what we do”.
Initially, Hewitt & Keenan focused on historic restoration projects in the inner city. Success in this area lead them into the development of office buildings, shopping centers, mixed use developments and hotel properties.
Hewitt is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. He is an avid hunter, outdoorsman, and always at home on the water. He and his wife live on Edisto Island with two horses and five dogs.
